Noncognitive Abilities and Within-Group Wage Inequality

چکیده
Noncognitive Abilities and Within-Group Wage Inequality This paper argues that endogenous restructuring processes within firms towards productivityenhancing human resource activities, triggered by advances in information and communication technologies (ICT) and rising supply of educated workers, are typically associated with higher demand for noncognitive abilities. Consistent with the evolution of the distribution of wages in advanced countries, this raises within-group wage inequality, possibly accompanied by a decline or stagnation of between-group wage dispersion. The mechanisms proposed in this research are consistent with empirical evidence on both the evolution of work-force composition in firms and the complementarity between skillupgrading, new technologies and knowledge-based work organization. Math Matters: Education Choices and Wage Inequality
SBTC is a powerful mechanism in explaining the increasing gap between educated and uneducated wages. However, SBTC cannot mimic the US within-group wage inequality. This paper provides an explanation for the observed intra-college group inequality by showing that the top decile earners’ significant wage growth is underpinned by the link between ex ante ability, math-heavy college majors and hig...
متن کاملThe Diffusion of Computers and the Distribution of Wages
Abstract This paper offers a theoretical model of the adoption and diffusion of computers at work to analyze between-group and within-group wage inequality, inspired by the empirical observation that the composition of the group of workers using a computer changes over time and that the timing of the rise in between-group and within-group wage inequality is different. The model conjectures that...
متن کاملUK wage inequality: An industry and regional perspective
This paper looks at male wage inequality in the United Kingdom across industries and regions over a fifteen year period. After controlling for the heterogeneity of productivity characteristics across the population, that part of wage inequality which cannot be explained by observable worker characteristics is examined. This is undertaken at both the industry and regional level to assess the key...
متن کاملHigher and higher? Performance pay and wage inequality in Germany
Performance pay is of growing importance to the wage structure as it applies to a rising share of employees. At the same time wage dispersion is growing continuously. This leads to the question of how the growing use of performance pay schemes is related to the increase in wage inequality? German SOEP data for the years 1984 to 2009 confirm the large increase in the application of performance p...
متن کاملNoncognitive Skills, Occupational Attainment, and Relative Wages∗
This paper examines whether men’s and women’s noncognitive skills influence their occupational attainment and, if so, whether this contributes to the disparity in their relative wages. We find that noncognitive skills have a substantial effect on the probability of employment in many, though not all, occupations in ways that differ by gender. Consequently, men and women with similar noncognitiv...
